Trade Deadline Arms Race

MLB’s 2014 trade deadline arrived with a flurry of activity, highlighted by the A’s addition of Jon Lester and immediate David Price counter by the Tigers.

But the trade deadline in Idle Time was no less exciting, as five of the teams currently in a playoff position completed trades to bolster their respective pitching staffs.

All told, there were twelve trades in our league this season, eleven of those coming just within the last two and a half weeks. That’s more than the total trades completed over the prior two years combined. We’re still a long way from the freewheelin’ and freedealin’ early days (28 trades completed in 2006, with another twelve vetoed), but at least the long-term keeper league strategy seems to be sinking in with our current stable of managers. Lots of draft picks changing hands along with seven of MLB’s top-rated prospects.

And with two weeks to go in the regular season, one of the divisions is still undecided: Yam Attack sits a half-game back of Locusts in the NL East. To make the end of the season even more exciting, the two teams currently slotted in 7th and 8th place (Try Hards and Blooper Reel, respectively) still have a very realistic shot at gaining enough ground to participate in the postseason.
